Comedy!
I have a new article up over at the Vilification Tennis website this week!
It is always a challenge when you are writing a comedy article that is supposed to be sexist. What I too sexist or not sexist enough?
Ten incredibly condescending questions that completely miss the point
My blog was recently followed by someone who is going through the difficult transition from Fundamentalist Christianity to being an atheist. I linked to a blog entry that includes ten questions for atheists. They are condescending and filled with fallacious assumptions but OK, whoever wrote this crap, I’ll answer your questions. In the spirit they were asked.
I also did not edit the questions so misspellings and grammatical weirdness remain.
1. If there is NO God, then there is no Measurement or Standard for morality? Then What will define morality?
What a great start, right? No god = no standard for morality.
So the question begins with a false premise. Why is god needed to provide a standard for morality? Is God the only thing that prevents you from treating those around you decently? Is a quick read of the bible the only thing that is holding you back from murdering your neighbors? If so – please keep reading.

Thou shalt not kill??? What the fuck? That is so totally not fair!
God does not tell us what is right and wrong. If he does, he is doing a shitty job of it. Some very religious people believe that the bible tells us to look down on homosexuals. Other very religious people believe that is incorrect. If God were responsible for defining morality, I’d like to see him/her/it get on the ball and actually fucking define it. Jesus told us to throw out the ten commandments and, basically, just be fucking nice to each other. Did we need God to do that?
I’m pretty sure most of us have figured that out for ourselves. Society defines morality and it is defined because we are social creatures and we need rules in order to live together.
First Episode of Geeks Without God is live
We had a great time recording four episodes of Geeks Without God this weekend. We recorded an episode with Melissa Kaercher about Prometheus, an episode with Kammy Lyon about SkepchickCon at the convention, an episode with Rebecca Watson of Skepchick.org and an episode with Stephanie Zvan and Jason Thiebault of FreethoughtBlogs! We were really excited to get time with all of them.
Our first episode went live this morning so hey, head over there and have a listen to all of us try to talk about the religious themes in Prometheus. It’s hard because there are so many other things to complain about….
Powerpoint Conspiracy Karaoke
Having complely killed at Power Point Karaoke today, I’m sharing my performance from last year’s panel. It was the first time it had been done at CONvergence and I had to go first. I think I did OK.
This year I killed it. I know I keep saying that. But I totally killed it.
I Hate Brian Keene
Actually, I don’t Hate Brian Keene. I just used that title as a hook.
Last year at CONvergence, I was on Iron Artist as a snobby French Beat Poet. This is a video of the poem I wrote. Be sure to watch to the end to see some terrific drawings!
Why am I a Geek?
This blog is going to be pretty quiet for the next several days because of CONvergence. That ought to be fine since I’m betting that 90% of my readers go to the con and won’t be reading anyone’s blog for the next several days.
Still, in case you’re around, we are still writing about what makes us geeks over at Geeks Without God. Today I get my turn.
Why is Molly a Geek?
So over at Geeks Without God, we’ve all posted why we are atheists. Now we are going to try to explain why we call ourselves geeks.
Molly gets to take first crack today. Check it out!
Alphabetical Movie – Inherit the Wind
Inherit the Wind is one of my favorite movies of all time. Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Gene Kelly and, in fact, all of the main actors are amazing. I could write an essay about nothing but how much I love the film.
But I’m me. So I’m not going to do that.
Instead, I’m going to talk about how this movie impacted my thoughts on science and religion.
Why is Nick an Atheist?
The third (and final) installment in the “Why I’m an Atheist” series is up over at Geeks Without God.
Nick tells his story today. Coming up next, we’ll all try to explain why we are geeks!
Combating Rationality with Irrationality
As a skeptic/atheist, I spend a fair amount of time reading popular blogs by individuals who think like I do. It makes sense, right? We all seek our tribe.
I do try to read stuff written by people with whom I disagree as well but that sort of thing tends to piss me off (I can only read so many creationist screeds) so I confess I don’t do nearly as much of that.
So in the last week, there has been a dust-up at FreethoughtBlogs (FtB) over the issue of harassment policy at skeptical conferences.
