Anti-Gay group starts Dump Starbucks Campaign
You know, the whole “we don’t hate gay people” drumbeat gets pretty old when you keep doing hateful bullshit like this. The campiagn is in response to the following:
On January 12th, 2012, Starbucks issued a memorandum declaring that same-sex marriage ‘is core to who we are and what we value as a company.’
As annoyed as I am at this petition, I note that some other folks have started a “send a thank you card to Starbucks” campaign, which, as of this morning, had almost twenty times as many supporters. Their initial goal was 40,000. They are almost at 500,000, which doesn’t piss me off – it’s fantastic.
If you haven’t followed the link and thanked Starbucks yet, make sure you do. They earned it.
Thank you Adam Savage
This weekend, the Reason Rally took place in Washington D.C. I wish I could have been there because I would love to have been a part of such a large gathering of people with whom I have so much in common. It’s what makes CONvergence such an amazing experience every year.

Pro-Life Advocates are Now Pushing a ban on Abortions if you can hear a Heartbeat
Are you fucking kidding me?
I am unapologetically Pro-choice. I don’t write about it much because it is such a useless debate. Both sides are so entrenched (myself included) that there is nothing to discuss.
But look – abortion is legal. Just barely.
Passing a law that says, in effect, “yeah, you can get an abortion right up to the point you actually know you are pregnant” is pretty shitty, isn’t it? It’s like saying “yes, you can have this ice cream cone unless you actually want the ice cream cone.”
I’ve got an idea for pro-life folks. How about a companion bill that says you can’t execute someone so long as they still have a heartbeat?
Jesus is power!
I spotted this article about a woman who noticed an image of Jesus in her power meter.
Now, I don’t want to say that I think she is crazy (although I do) but take a look at “Jesus.”

Doesn’t he look a lot more like Salvador Dali to you?

Or maybe Robert De Niro from The Mission?

Actually, the more I look at it, the more it looks like….

OH MY GOD!
I KNOW JESUS!
And he tells dick jokes. Who knew?
Alphabetical Movie – Hollywoodland
Hollywoodland is about the questionable circumstances surrounding the death of George Reeves. By “questionable,” I mean that there are some conspiracy theorists who believe he was murdered but the odds are pretty good that he killed himself.
I think the movie explores that fundamental disconnect most of us feel when we hear that someone who appeared to have everything to live for choose to end their life. It seems unimaginable that they would do such a thing.
Except for Kurt Cobain. That didn’t surprise anyone.
While many of us have contemplated suicide at some point, very few actually go so far as to attempt it. So while most of us can understand thinking about suicide, very few of us can actually understand doing it.
I was seeing a therapist a while back – because I’m as messed up as anyone else – and she asked me if I’d ever considered suicide. Sure, I said, I’d thought about it once or twice. But, I said, I’m an atheist. I don’t think that there is anything to look forward to after this life. Why would I ever consider giving up even a second of the one life that I have? It isn’t that life can’t suck. What’s the alternative, though? I may not believe in god but I still believe life is one hell of a gift and I’m not about to give up on it just because I had a shitty week.
So I look at George Reeves – who was freakin’ Superman – and I don’t get it. Even as the film shows me how low his life had sunk, it still doesn’t look too bad to me. Not so bad that death seemed like the best alternative.
I would imagine that is where the conspiracy theories come from. We all figure that if we had a job as awesome as being Superman, there is no way we’d kill ourselves. If we wouldn’t do it, there is no way he would do it. Someone else must have killed him! It’s the only thing that makes any sort of logical sense.
Except that people do things that don’t make any logical sense all the time. If we lived our lives purely based on logic, we’d never make rash decisions. Gambling Casinos would close up because we’d all do the basic math. Most of us would never have kids because we’d come to the logical conclusion that we didn’t have the slightest idea how to raise a child. Logic doesn’t rule our lives.
Yet we want George Reeve’s death to be logical because if Superman can end his life in such an illogical way, we could probably do it too.
And we could. The lesson in George Reeve’s suicide is that any one of us can reach that dark place – no matter how certain we are that we’d never find ourselves there. Reeves himself probably never imagined he’d kill himself.
But one night, against all logic, he did. So long, Superman.

The Pope Once Again Proves that the Problems with the Catholic Church Start at the top
The Pope could be an amazing force for good in the world. He could point out that Jesus said those without sin should cast the first stone. He could point out that when it comes to issues of marriage, the bible is a little bit wishy-washy as to what is “traditional.”
He doesn’t, of course, because he is an old man more concerned with antiquated dogma than he is with what is truly right or in the best interests of his church and it’s members. Thing is, whoever replaces him will be another old man more concerned with antiquated dogma than with what is truly right or in the best interests of his church and it’s members.
Atheism in media watch – Paul
I’m always interested to see how atheists are depicted in mainstream media. In my opinion, most atheists are depicted as “broken” in some way. Their disbelief is used as a plot element to highlight their alienation from “normal” people.
When this is done, it pisses me off. I’ve taken to chronicling my perceptions of how atheists are depicted in media.
Paul, the latest comedy by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost represents one of the first times I’m chronicling an atheist in media because it makes me happy.
Pegg and Frost are are both atheists so for once, the fact characters in the film are atheists is not something that makes them different or awkward.
I’m not going to spoil the film (even though it is a year old) by explaining funny situations in a way that is not at all funny.
Instead, I’m going to say that the nice thing about the character of Paul is that he is unapologetically evolutionist and atheistic because he’s seen enough to know. As a bonus we get a character who transitions from a fundamentalist Christian in a positive way.
The difference in the way this film depicts an atheist is, I think, in the fact that atheism is just part of who Paul is. It doesn’t define him or make him so terribly different from anyone else. It happens so rarely in media, I think it is worth pointing out.

Brittany Spears’ Criminal
Three times in a row my weekly tirade has started with a song that made me angry. I’m sorry about that. They keep playing this crap at work and I can’t escape.
The thing that annoys me about this song is the musical hook. It is horrible and they won’t stop playing it. It feels like the entire song is that one banal progression of notes.
Those notes are, oddly, the exact opposite of an earworm to me. Instead of being a tune I can’t get out of my head, it is a tune I instantly forget until it gets played again and I remember how much I hate it.
It’s like having short term memory loss. I forget about the song until it gets played again so every time I heard it, I get to say “what the hell is this horrible song? Oh, it’s that one.” That might not be so bad except for the fact the annoyance doesn’t subside with repeated exposure to the song. Completely unfair.
What saying “Atheism is a Religion” is really about
I get pretty riled up every time someone says to me “atheism is just another form of religion.”
It is such a common statement that you can find dozens of pages arguing both for and against the claim. I, of course, think the statement is ridiculous but the thing is, the argument isn’t important. It simply obscures the real question – which is the evidence for why I believe what I believe.

Forgive the absence of my weekly bitch session – I’ve been on vacation for the last two weeks. Some of this stuff is a little old but I wanted to bitch about it anyway.
