Geeks Without God Talks about CONvergence a Little bit More
Well CONvergence is almost here and even though we geeked out about the convention a couple of weeks ago, we decided we wanted to do it a little more. This week we talk about stuff like the costumes that we’ll be wearing (OK – the costumes Nick and Molly will be wearing) and we tell some fun stories from past conventions.
The con is coming up in just a couple of days so if you are as excited about it as we are, this episode is a great way to whet your appetite.
Geeks Without God Talks about Nuclear War
As we’ve progressed through our first year recording Geeks Without God, we’ve seen a lot of changes in how we schedule our episodes. Early on, we did a geeky boner episode every month. We didn’t do it because we were lazy but we wanted to make sure that we never forgot about the “Geeks” part in “Geeks Without God.” However, when you do podcasts about stuff like your favorite convention, A fundamentalist Board Game, and Dr. Who, you find that you are covering the “Geeks” pretty well.
But still, it is a lot of fun to just sit down and geek out for a while. This week’s podcast is one of those.
Geekery is a lot broader than movies or comics or TV shows, though. We talked about stuff like running a half marathon, playing games on a 3DS and, of course, National Parks.
Also note: we have a little blurb for Camp Quest Minnesota at the end of the podcast. They still have openings for their Summer Camp!
Geeks Without God Gets Reflective about Comedy
This week’s episode features emergency fill-in guest Joseph Scrimshaw. Joseph is in the midst of a big Kickstarter campaign so it seemed like a great time to feature him on the podcast. We got him to tell us all about the Kickstarter (of course) and then we talked about Joseph’s favorite obsession, comic theory.
Speaking of Joseph’s Kickstarter, my band, The Dregs, will be contributing a song to his Flaw Fest album assuming it gets funded so now I’m not just excited because I like the idea, I’m also excited because I want to write a song about guilt for Joseph’s album.
He also decided that Bugs Bunny is an atheist and I’m all for putting Bugs in our court.
So hey, listen to the podcast and support the Kickstarter! It’s what friends do!
Geeks Without God Talks About CONvergence
Our podcast got started at CONvergence 2012 and as CONvergence 2013 approaches, we decided to spend some time talking about the convention because, honestly, it’s one of our favorite weekends of the year. The three of us have a busy weekend planned. How busy?
Well, you can listen to the episode to find out!
Geeks Without God gets Artsy Fartsy
I gotta be honest. I could have talked about this week’s topic for a lot longer than we did. Our jumping off point was a discussion of a jackass that Molly had as a professor in college. From there, we talked about the idea of aesthetic beauty and what art we all found attractive or interesting.
Of course, given the theme of the podcast, we also talked about whether or not religion could be afforded any intrinsic value because of the art and architecture that has been created in the name of religion.
It is all very philosophical and involves discussions of trips to Europe, artistic styles and even comic books. Have a listen if that is your thing!
Geeks Without God Talks Politics
What a week it has been. When we sat down to record our podcast last week, same-sex marriage was not legal in Minnesota. Today, Governor Dayton signs that bill into law.
Eric Jacobson bid a tidy sum of money at the Fearless launch party for the right to join us this week. He wanted to talk about atheists in politics so that’s exactly what we discussed. Of course we talked about the upcoming votes in the Minnesota House and Senate and perhaps you will enjoy reaching back into history to hear our thoughts about the legislation and the chances for success.
The central question for anyone who is living a godless life is how do we have more impact on the political process as atheists? We didn’t answer that question in the podcast but we hope that by talking about politics, we can convince other godless folk to get involved in politics.
Eric also provides a stunning level of detail about his sandwich. Click here and enjoy!!
Geeks Without God Plays a Lame-ass Game!
So we had this great idea for a podcast. We figured we’d get Brianne Bilyeu, Stephanie Zvan and Jason Thiebault, all former guests of our show (and bloggers on FreeThought Blogs), on the podcast again. We’d have all of them play “Left Behind: The Board Game” with us while consuming Moonshine soaked cherries and it would be a hoot!
We didn’t count on one of the worst designed games ever devised. The board game is not merely a horrible fundamentalist screed. It is a horrible board game. We tried mightily to make the podcast interesting and I don’t know if we succeeded or not.
Just in case we didn’t, though, we came up with a solution. A drinking game!
So go to the website, play the podcast and follow the rules written there. It won’t make the game any better but it will probably seem a lot better.
Geeks Without God Goes to the Zoo
We have a pretty laid back Geeks Without God this week. The three of us got together on Sunday afternoon of Omega Spring. We were all pretty sleep deprived but had enjoyed our weekend so we ended up just telling stories about games we played, media we watched and a trip to the zoo. Having tackled some serious topics of late, this episode is decidedly schizophrenic. It’s also pretty mellow and goofy.
So if that is your thing, please have a listen.
Geeks Without God, UNCENCORED!
This week features the second episode we were able to record at Skep-Tech this year. We sat down with Zach Weinersmith from Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal and we talked about censorship. Zach gave a talk about censorship at the conference and his talk served as the springboard for a lot of conversation about when (if ever) censorship might be a good thing.
We were able to record in front of a live audience, which is, for me at least, my favorite way to record the podcast. We managed to get much better sound quality for this one versus our last Skep-Tech panel although I really need to work on getting some better equipment for panels like this. Perhaps there is a rich atheist out here just itching to give a group of godless geeky comedians a thousand dollars for some ace equipment.
But I digress. Zach was a really great guest and I’m very happy with the episode. Make sure you listen to our five questions because we get to work on unlocking the gay agenda! Enjoy!
Geeks Without God gets Super Geeky this Week
We’ve had so much other great stuff going on at Geeks Without God that we haven’t talked geeky boners in almost two months. This week we make up for that shortcoming by spending lots of time discussing our latest geeky obsessions. We talk about movies and for once, I didn’t even bring them up. Instead, I spent a ton of time talking about tabletop games. And I mean a ton of time talking about tabletop gaming.
After serious talks about alcoholism, it was nice to kick back and just geek out for a while. Listen to our geekiness here.
