Alphabetical Movie – The Hurt Locker
Francois Truffaut famously said it is impossible to make an anti-war film.
His meaning, I think, was to suggest that any film about war – no matter the perspective of the filmmaker – ends up glorifying war to some degree. I see what he meant although I don’t agree with him. One needs only watch Paths of Glory to see a film about war that doesn’t glorify it in the slightest.
You know what the Gay Marriage movement needs? Someone at the Top with Conviction.
I was listening to MPR this morning and they had a report on the Obama Administration’s attempts to back pedal from the Vice President’s remarks on gay marriage.
Biden, committing one of his legendary “gaffes” said that he was “absolutely comfortable” with gay marriage. Note that “gaffe” is in quotes because saying you support gay marriage is not a gaffe. For his part, the most Obama has ever said on the issue is that his position is “evolving.”

Lots of updates to the Vilification Tennis website this morning.
I wrote a new Movie Dick article exploring the real reasons behind the success of The Avengers.
We also posted episode III of the Vilification Tennis podcast where we talk about freakish tanning lady, have Courney McClean sing us a dirty song and say insensitive things about dead celebrities. We also play two of the worst rounds of the Vilification Tennis home game EVER.
Shit that Pissed me off this Week – 5/4
Football Coach would be “Honored” if he was Fired for Anti-Gay Rhetoric
Never fails. I post “Shit that Pissed me Off” and I immediately see something else. This story is a week old but it still pisses me off.
He says that if he is fired for anti gay language, he’d be honored to be “fired for his faith.” This in spite of the fact that there is very dubious evidence for using the bible as an excuse to hate on gay people.
He’s not going to be fired because of his faith. He’s going to be fired because he has chosen very specific passages from a badly translated book to support a prejudice he already had. Then he communicates it to a bunch of kids who look at him as an authority figure.
Alphabetical Movie – The Hunt for Red October
As movies about a silent submarines go, The Hunt for Red October is a surprisingly effective thriller. I keep meaning to show it to my eldest son as I think he’d enjoy it. Thing is, I’m just not sure how to explain the Cold War to him.
Get your Trivia ON!
This weekend is the GPS Team Trivia Challenge. I’ve been the host of this event since it started back in 1999 as well as one of the folks writing/vetting questions for the contest.
I’m just bringing it up because even if you don’t want to compete, it is a great spectator sport. You can sit in the audience and smugly tell your neighbors how you knew all the answers and you totally would have won if only you’d been able to find two other teammates.
If you do want to compete, though, it is also a lot of fun. Check out the link for more information or ask me!
Not so Serenely Accepting that Which I Cannot Change
My son Alex is a Boy Scout and he really enjoys it. He very much wants to make it all the way to Eagle Scout and I want to support him on his journey. They have been so anxious to work with his social challenges and find ways that he can be included in the group. Every moment he’s spent with scouts has helped me to ignore the misgivings I have about the Boy Scouts of America.
And yet, I do have misgivings. Primary among them is their unflinching policy when it comes to gays and lesbians involved in their organization.
My Wife Says I Breed True
I’m Just loving this picture my mom posted of me and my brother when we were kids. I’m the big brother.
Talk about a great picture of a couple of kids just enjoying the spring snow melt! I spend a lot of time trying to capture my own kids with natural smiles. It only happens when they are too busy enjoying themselves to notice the camera.
I remember that jacket. Couldn’t tell you one other thing about the picture, but I remember the jacket.
I showed this picture to some friends and didn’t tell them who the kids were. They thought it was my two boys. Pretty amazing how much my children look like me and my brother. My wife says I breed true.
I guess it’s pretty clear our kids are mine.
Or my brother’s…..
Why the Right Answer is Better than a Comforting One
One of the things that bugs me, when I stop to think about it, is the finality of death. I believe that when we die, that’s it. Whoever we were and whatever we did will be remembered for some indeterminate length of time but we won’t know it.
Our consciousness, however we define it, is finite.
