Shit that Pissed me Off – 11/17/17
I almost didn’t write a post this week. I mean, I knew this was the big story and I was going to have to talk about it because it pissed me the hell right off.
But fuck.
As many liberals have pointed out, you can’t say that Roy Moore is a pedophile (he is) and Donald Trump is a sexual predator (he is) without also acknowledging that Franken’s behavior (which he has admitted) is also unacceptable.
You can’t be that hypocrite on the left.
If you are on the right, you can totally be that hypocrite (as our hypocrite in chief quickly displayed). On the left, we accept that if we are going to go after right wing predators (like our President), we can’t just ignore when our heroes do the same shit.
So fuck Al Franken for doing what he did. Fuck him for being the same as so many other guys out there.
And I’m not saying this because I think he’s a bad guy. I’m not saying this because I don’t think he respects women. I’m saying this because I think he is a good person and he does respect women.
But like so many other men, he didn’t understand what that really meant.

Women Can’t Get Directing Jobs in Hollywood But Men Can
You know what is great about Wonder Woman? It was directed by a woman. Not because women should direct female helmed super hero films but because hardly any women direct feature films. Is it because they don’t want to or because Hollywood is notoriously progressive until it comes to actually giving women jobs?
Before you answer that question, keep in mind that Patty Jenkins directed Monster in 2003. Charlize Theron won Best Actress for the film. The next feature film Jenkins directed?
Wonder Woman in 2017
The article above talks about Colin Trevorrow, who was handed the keys to Jurassic World after having made one mildly successful Independent film. He’s now the announced director for Star Wars Episode IX. He also directed the new, apparently horrible, film Book of Henry.
The problem here is men with no experience are handed the keys to major films all the time. Women with experience are not. Know how many movies Kathryn Bigelow has directed since she won an Oscar for Best Director in 2008? Two.
Maybe someone tried to hand her a Star Wars movie. But I’m betting they didn’t.

I mean it’s not like there’s anything in Star Wars for women to like, right?
The issue here isn’t Colin Trevorrow getting work. It is the fact he is being handed major blockbuster films when more experienced women don’t even get a call. I mean, Michael Bay makes unintelligible crap but at least his films make (for some inexplicable reason) gigantic piles of money. When Trevorrow was given Jurassic World, there was no evidence he could do the same.
Except for the fact he was making a Jurassic Park movie so of course it was going to make gigantic piles of money.
If you handed a Captain America movie to a woman director, it would also make piles of money. So why doesn’t that happen? They only super hero movie handed to a woman so far is the movie about a hero who is a woman.
It can’t be sexism right? It has to be something else.
No. It’s totally sexism.
Friend a Day – Cathy Wick
For Mother’s Day, my friend a day is my mom. I love my mom because she’s my mom but because this is a Friend a Day post, I’m going to write about why I like her a lot.
Just this last week, we went to see Neil deGrasse Tyson speak. I went because mom got an e-mail about the event and asked if I wanted to go. Not being stupid, I said absolutely yes. We had a great time at that event and Dr. Tyson has always impressed me as someone who is excited about teaching people about science.
He’s not the first person who taught me to be excited about learning, though. That person was mom. She’s was a teacher of mathematics for most of my formative years and she was good at it because she loved sharing math with kids. She wouldn’t just talk about her work day, she would talk about the ways she was teaching math that made her excited.
I always tell people I’m the child of math teachers because I’m proud to have come from that background. Math teachers are awesome. Mom taught me that.
I love going on vacations with mom because she gets so completely immersed in what we are going to do. We are heading to Yellowstone later this spring and ever since the plans were made, she has been watching the Old Faithful webcam and sending me regular messages when the geyser is about to erupt.
She keeps trying new things in her life and I think that is part of that teacher mentality that she should always be learning. Right now, she is doing a sketch journal and talks about it a lot. It is a new thing that has her really excited and I think that’s great.
She’s always looking for new things to get her excited. And she always finds them.
I love my Mom, yes. But I also like spending time with her as a person. For that, I feel incredibly lucky. Thanks, Mom! Happy Mother’s Day!
