Shit that Pissed me off this Week – 5/4

Football Coach would be “Honored” if he was Fired for Anti-Gay Rhetoric

Never fails.  I post “Shit that Pissed me Off” and I immediately see something else.  This story is a week old but it still pisses me off.

He says that if he is fired for anti gay language, he’d be honored to be “fired for his faith.”  This in spite of the fact that there is very dubious evidence for using the bible as an excuse to hate on gay people.

He’s not going to be fired because of his faith.  He’s going to be fired because he has chosen very specific passages from a badly translated book to support a prejudice he already had.  Then he communicates it to a bunch of kids who look at him as an authority figure.

Glenn Grossman is at it Again

This isn’t the first time WI State Senator has put his foot in it.  Now has claimed women actually want to be single mothers and that women are “trained” to tell doctors their pregnancies are unplanned so they can get an abortion.

Where did this come from?  There must be a woman in his past who really shafted him and now he is taking it out on her entire sex.

I might be reading too much into the situation.  It’s possible he’s just an asshole.

Catholic Bishops get together to whine about how misunderstood they all are

In the wake of all the work the Catholic church has been doing against women and homosexuals lately, they decided they needed to complain about the lack of religious freedom in the United States.

As always, the Church only gets pissed off when the government tells them to do something (like provide health plans that actually benefit women).  As soon as they want to tell the government what to do (like pass anti-gay marriage ammendments), the story is a little different.

The Leader of the Russian Orthodox Church Lies to the Press about a Watch

Patriarch Krill I, the religious leader of millions of people, was photographed wearing a watch reputed to be worth over $30,000.  In a country where that exceeds the annual income of most households, that’s a pretty big deal.

So then, the picture is photoshopped to make the watch go away.  That doesn’t work because they forget to get rid of the watch’s reflection.  How do you say “d’oh” in Russian?

D'ohsvidonia!

The church apologizes for the incident and calls it a “technical mistake.”  With me so far?

So the Patriarch decides to take his asshattery just one step too far and he denies that he’s ever worn the watch, going so far as to claim that any picture showing him wearing the watch has been photoshopped.

He doesn’t say something like “yes, the watch was a gift and I liked it so much, I kept it rather than selling it” or “holy shit!  It’s worth how much??  I had not idea!”

No, he says he’s never worn the damn thing and that there are a bunch of conspiracy theorists running around the internet gleefully cackling as they maliciously put watches on every picture they find.  “That’ll show ‘im,” they laugh, “now the world will think he’s a materialistic scuzzbag when he’s actually not!”

The reality is the dude has been wearing the watch and rather than fess up, he lied about it.  The leader of one of the most powerful churches in Russia lied.

About a fucking watch.

Side note: The dudes name is really “Krill?”  I’ll bet whales scare the shit out of him.

Hey, I have an idea! Let’s make some gross generalizations about Immigration!

I’ve seen this meme on Facebook a few times and I’ve dismissed it as something I would rather ignore.  I guess that I just finally saw it one too many times and I think that it is time to really parse out what they are saying to understand the point this meme is trying to make.

Let’s start with what I must assume this means:

Shooting illegal immigrants is a better solution than allowing them into our country.  I mean, look at what they do in North Korea, Afghanistan and Iran.  Now those are some countries we all want to emulate!

Michelle Dugar thinks Overpopulation is “not accurate”

The mother of 19 indicates she doesn’t know very much about – well – anything when she says that the entire population of the world could fit inside Jacksonville, Florida.

If we are going by sheer volume of people, she may be right.  I don’t know.  What I do know is that they would still have to live somewhere and they would still need to be fed and they would need someone to produce clothes for them and….you get the idea.

She shows that having the ability to count to 19 does not mean she has the ability to do math.

Doubling Down on gay Marriage – Let’s get to the Kids!

The Archdiocese of St. Paul decided that it isn’t doing enough to combat the evil spectre of gay marriage in America so they have started to focus on the kids.

The Star Tribune reported on a mandatory assembly that DeLasalle High Schoolers were recently forced to attend.  The subject of the assembly was, of course, marriage and we all know what that is code for, right?

Anti-Gay group starts Dump Starbucks Campaign

You know, the whole “we don’t hate gay people” drumbeat gets pretty old when you keep doing hateful bullshit like this.  The campiagn is in response to the following:

On January 12th, 2012, Starbucks issued a memorandum declaring that same-sex marriage ‘is core to who we are and what we value as a company.’

As annoyed as I am at this petition, I note that some other folks have started a “send a thank you card to Starbucks” campaign, which, as of this morning, had almost twenty times as many supporters.  Their initial goal was 40,000.  They are almost at 500,000, which doesn’t piss me off – it’s fantastic.

If you haven’t followed the link and thanked Starbucks yet, make sure you do.  They earned it.

Racism and Making Excuses

The world of social media is amazing.  Over the last few weeks, there has  been a ton of information about Trayvon Martin.  Lots of details are emerging.  Was he a victim of racial prejudice?  A scared kid trying to defend himself?  Was he a violent aggressor?  I don’t know all the details and nobody will ever know all of them because the victim is dead and he can’t tell his side of the story.

All of this information is playing out in real time and you can find new details about the case emerging by the minute.  Here’s what bothers me, though.

There should be no question that Martin’s race was a factor in this situation.  He was a black youth out past dark in a predominantly white neighborhood.  It doesn’t matter what anyone says to come up with some other “reasonable” justification.  Martin is dead because he was black.

Pro-Life Advocates are Now Pushing a ban on Abortions if you can hear a Heartbeat

Are you fucking kidding me?

I am unapologetically Pro-choice. I don’t write about it much because it is such a useless debate. Both sides are so entrenched (myself included) that there is nothing to discuss.

But look – abortion is legal. Just barely.

Passing a law that says, in effect, “yeah, you can get an abortion right up to the point you actually know you are pregnant” is pretty shitty, isn’t it? It’s like saying “yes, you can have this ice cream cone unless you actually want the ice cream cone.”

I’ve got an idea for pro-life folks. How about a companion bill that says you can’t execute someone so long as they still have a heartbeat?
