I Watched Far Too Much of a Debate Between Chris Kluwe and GamerGate Supporter
I admit I didn’t watch the whole thing because at some point it was just embarrassing. I was watching Rocky beat the crap out of Gilligan.
If Gilligan were a misogynistic asshole. So let’s just say I don’t feel sorry for Gilligan.
Why Kluwe decided to devote 90 minutes to this guy and his legion of whiny jackasses, who honestly believe that if they click their heels together while saying “ethics in game journalism” enough times they can make it true, is a question only he can answer.
I would hope it isn’t because he thought he could get through to this guy, who seemed more interested in improper definitions of the word “cult” than he was in making a cogent point. If he was doing it to help make this guy look like more of an idiot, his mission was accomplished.
Further….
Aw fuck. I looked at the comments. Fuck this.
What I Learned – Just Dance
I’m writing a blog series about what I learned in 2014. The year had highs and lows – as any year does – but I learned a lot.
I’ve never been a very good dancer. I’m stiff and not very flexible and I’m generally more interested in singing along to a song than dancing to the song so I end up doing this sing-y danc-y thing with a lot of unnecessary clapping.
If I wasn’t keenly aware of my skills as a dancer already, there are plenty of people who are present to remind me. Hell, The Dregs have made a running bit out of my dancing skills. I usually try to dance even worse than I already dance just to help punctuate the joke.
Lots of people are bad dancers and I’m good at a great many other things so my self-esteem doesn’t take too hard a hit when people tease me about my inability to cut an impressive rug.
2014, though, was the year where I agreed to dance in front of everyone. And not as a joke.
During the after part of the Minnesota Fringe Festival in 2013, Windy Bowlsby and I were watching a bunch of our friends on the dance floor. They were actors, comedians, writers and even dancers.
And I said to her that it would be interesting to see a dance show where all the dancers were people who didn’t dance. I specifically talked about writers but the basic thought was that it would be fun to see a good choreographer (Windy) take people who weren’t known as dancers and get them to dance on stage in front of an audience. As a serious dance show.
The moment the suggestion passed my lips, I knew that if she liked the idea, she was going to ask me to be in the show.
My philosophy is to say “yes” to the performance ideas that scare me because I can’t grow if I keep doing the projects that are safe. So of course Windy asked me if I’d be in such and show and of course I said yes.
And such was the birth of “Jumpin’ Jack Kerouac.”
The show was the best kind of success. It didn’t succeed because we all suddenly became great dancers but because Windy found a way to bring out the best in all of us and she made the show about something other than “let’s all laugh at these awkward writers trying to dance.”
It became a celebration of potential and I had a lot of performers telling me how much that show touched them. It touched me too.
The classic phrase is we should learn to dance like no-one is watching. But someone is always watching. Even if we shut out everyone else, there is a little piece of ourselves that is keenly aware of our own body movements. And if you are me, you are aware of how dorky you probably look.
At the Fringe after party the last few years, I’ve watched a whole lot of awkward people dancing enough to know that they don’t care if anyone is watching. When dancing to “Firework,” most people aren’t concerned with dancing like a professional. They just want to dance.
Are people watching me and laughing at how awkward I am on the dance floor? Probably not because there is someone right next to me who is just as awkward. Being a bad dancer isn’t the exception. Most people are bad dancers.
And most people dance anyway because they just feel like dancing.
So what I learned in 2014 is to say “fuck it. I feel like dancing.”

United and Orbitz are Suing a Guy for Exploiting a Loophole
I just keep thinking if the dude is exploiting a loophole in your system and you want him to stop, you could just close the fucking loophole.
Instead of figuring out that problem, they are suing a guy who isn’t making any money. He just outsmarted them. What an asshole, right?
They have lawyers sitting around waiting for something to do. It’s probably cheaper for them to threaten this kid than it is for them to figure out how to fix the gap in their own procedures.
Or they could just accept that some people are going to get a cheaper fare and stop giving out free pop on flights. I mean, they’ll do that eventually anyway, right?
Shit that Pissed me Off – December 26th
This video is actually fucking hilarious. The stinger at the end – freaking brilliant.
But I can’t get the song out of my head. It is an earworm of epic proportions. On Christmas Eve, we weren’t singing holiday tunes. We were singing the damn Shia LaBeouf song.
In the kitchen! Shia LaBeouf!
Cooking up the meat! Shia LaBeouf!
Opening the Presents! Hollywood superstar Shia LaBeouf!
It’s probably best if you don’t watch the video. Your sanity may depend on it.

Sony Pulls The Interview Then Paramount Pulls Team America
I’m one of a comparatively small number of people who has actually seen The Interview and I’m frustrated because the movie is funny and now it is up in the air if anyone else will ever see it.
When people accuse Sony of cowardice, I think they fail to understand the extent of the hack that was perpetrated against them. Besides, why put a movie into release if nobody is going to show it? Remember, the whole idea behind the film industry is to make a profit. You don’t make a profit if your movie is only showing in five theaters.
Paramount, on the other hand, shouldn’t give a flying fuck about allowing exhibitors to show a film that was released years ago. I have no idea why they went belly up on this one. The only theaters showing it were theaters that wanted to show it and didn’t give a crap about terroristic threats that are considered unfounded. So let ’em show it. What the hell?
Anyone out there who thinks terrorism doesn’t work should use this attack as exhibit one. Whoever did this torpedoed a film. Two films, really. The terrorists won this round with a remarkably minimal effort.
And hey, if this is really North Korea getting a stick up its ass about a less than flattering portrayal of their glorious leader, I have a really good idea. They can make a film about some North Korean journalists trying to kill a US President.
I guarantee that no matter how much effort they put into making Obama look like a buffoon, he still won’t look any worse than the average Tea Partier’s concept of him.

Thanks to Michelle Duggar, Fayetteville Arkansas is That Much Less Safe for the GLBT Community
Duggar, who thinks her rights to free speech are being infringed every time someone disagrees with her, characterized transgender women as “males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls.”
Seems like she was speaking freely right there.
And her fear mongering worked as Fayetteville voters overturned an ordinance meant to protect those dudes with past child predator convictions who, in fact, don’t have any convictions for being child predators.

This is Susan Smith. She murdered her children. Since she is not a convicted predator, I presume Michelle Duggar would not have an issue if Smith shared a bathroom with her daughters.
Fuck you transgender people! Michelle Duggar is uncomfortable with the idea that one of you might be peeing in the stall next to her so she made up some shit about you being a pedophile.
And it worked.
Let’s be fair, though. She didn’t make that shit up. Someone else did. She just affixed her name to it because, apparently, she agreed.
Man, I hope one of her kids is gay or transgender. She needs to hate someone close to her so she can truly understand what kind of person she is.

I don’t suggest clicking on the link above. I know very few people who would sympathize with what is written there.
As someone who tries very hard to support feminism, I see nothing of value in this woman’s rant about how men are clearly inferior to women. They aren’t. They are different. In some (mostly physical) ways men have certain advantages. In other ways they do not. When you remove the obstacles society creates for women, men and women are mostly equal.

Except Matt Damon. Matt Damon is clearly superior to everyone. I want to be clear that his superiority has nothing to do with his gender.
The problem is people viewing this extreme point of view and calling it feminism. As if all feminists are out there just despising men for having the misfortune to exist.
When, in truth, hardly any of them are.
Every point of view has it’s extremes. The problem becomes people viewing the extreme position as representative of the entire position. Feminism is about working to fix a society that is off balance. It is not about creating a “utopia” where men don’t exist.

Religious Conservatives Believe in Free Speech as Long as They are Doing the Speaking
In this case, the Duggars are getting a lot of flack for saying bigoted stuff because the bible says that kind of speech is OK. Problem is, some folks don’t agree and have started a petition to get their show taken off the air.
So what’s the big deal you ask? By petitioning TLC (that show is on The Learning Channel? Really?) to cancel the show, they are attacking the Duggar’s right to free speech!

I got this picture off of their family blog where they are regularly prevented from exercising their right to free speech.
I can’t believe we have to go over this again but NO WE ARE NOT! Having the right to free speech is not the same thing as consequence free speech. When you say thing that pisses people off, they get to say things back.
It amazes me that conservative Christians claim they are being “silenced” when all that is happening is people are calling them on their bullshit.

I didn’t know who this guy was until I clicked the wrong link. Now I know all about him.
I would hope you don’t need to be a feminist to think he’s a complete sleaze bag who deserves to be maced on a regular basis. He makes money holding seminars telling guys how to be awful to their partners. He doesn’t respect women and he also doesn’t respect men because he thinks guys are supposed to treat women like shit because they are women.
Thing is, he may not even be the asshole he pretends to be. He just says this stuff to get lonely suckers to come to his seminars.
Then you have the guys who pay money because they want to be like the person he pretends to be. You have to be a pretty awful human being for this kind of thing to be worth your time.
Holy shit guys, it isn’t that hard. You want women to like you? Be fucking nice to them. And don’t get angry if they don’t want to have sex with you because that isn’t what they are there for.

Anti Gay Rights Rally in Houston Had T-Shirts!
That’s right, they had shirts that read “we reserve the right to refuse services to homosexuals.”
I mean, good for them. They have completely ensured that everyone who sees them will know that they would happily torpedo their best interests as business owners because they are bigoted assholes.
Some the people are kids, of course, so they will only be able to refuse service to homosexuals at lemonade stands. Or when they are going around the neighborhood offering to mow lawns, they’ll just skip the houses with rainbow flags hanging in front.
Their attitude amazes me because I can’t understand why anyone would be proud to refuse services to homosexuals. I don’t have the bible memorized but I’d sure like someone to show me where Jesus told everyone that refusing to sell someone cupcakes makes you closer to god.
Stay classy, people who really fucking hate the fact that homosexuals aren’t going to stay in the closet. The more T-shirts you print, the more everyone else will see you for what you are and realize they can be better people than you.
