George Zimmerman Acquitted

Thing is, I didn’t think that there was a chance in hell that Zimmerman was going to be found guilty and honestly, I don’t think he should have spent the rest of his life in prison.  I think he should have gone to prison but not for the rest of his life.  Splitting hairs, maybe, but there you go.

While it seems probable that Trayvon Martin did attack Zimmerman, it also seems clear that Zimmerman would not have been in a position to be attacked if he’d followed directions and stayed in his car.  He didn’t and a teenaged boy is dead.

In the end, nobody learned anything.  Zimmerman feels like his actions have been vindicated.  In fact, he feels like killing Martin was part of God’s plan. A belief that won’t be shaken given the verdict. Trayvon Martin can learn nothing ever again because he’s still dead.

Or – since it was all part of god’s plan – maybe he’s burning in hell and learning a lot. Too bad it won’t do him any good. Ha ha!

Is Zimmerman guilty of murder?  Apparently not.  I still believe that what he did was wrong.  And it exposed something ugly about our country that a lot of us would rather ignore. Like the fact Zimmerman can go free while a black woman can spend 20 years in jail for firing two warning shots so her abusive husband would stay away from her.

Sadly enough, after the uproar about this verdict dies down, we’ll just go back to ignoring it.

Death Valley Officials Have Asked Tourists to Stop Frying Eggs on Rocks and Pavement

OK, those National Park Rangers just don’t want to let tourists have any fun!  I mean, why are we going to Death Valley National Park if not to engage in science experiments that…don’t work?

Turns out that you can’t just fry an egg on the pavement.  It isn’t quite that hot.  You could do it if you have a frying pan and the video that is inspiring all of this failed egg frying even mentions that it doesn’t work without one but facts are unimportant when you are trying to do science!

Check out the SCIENCE!

Cleaning up after yourself is also, apparently, unimportant.  Better to just leave eggshells and unfried eggs all over the place because you were too stupid to follow directions.

The message here is clear: don’t tell people how to do cool science experiments because they will probably just fuck it up.

Pakistani Actress Gets Acid Thrown on Her Face

Now why did this happen?  It happened because the Taliban in Pakistan are doing this to a lot of women. Their religiously motivated hatred of women is so deep, it is driving them to assault women simply because they are asking for an education.

I don’t dislike Islam any more than I dislike other organized religion but this is a fine example of what bothers about most of them.  On the one hand, they talk about how their treatment of women shows such a high level of respect.

On the other hand.  That is bullshit.

You don’t throw acid on someone because you respect them.  You throw acid on someone because you want to punish them for existing.

I’m just trying to find out on which page of the Koran you can find this picture. I’m sure it’s near the picture of a woman. Ha ha! No it isn’t. No false idols, remember??

The Taliban practice a warped version of Islam.  That is true. Religion is so easily warped already and that is what bothers me. Any religion that suggests women must cover themselves to avoid tempting men (as all the Abrahamic religions do) has created something that can be warped in the most sinister ways.

And yeah, I think I’ll call throwing acid on someone “sinister.”

There are Almost Literally No Movies Featuring Women any More

The article I link to points out that 90 percent of the films showing last weekend we all about guys or groups of guys.  That’s pretty pathetic.

Now I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy watching movies about guys.  I’m a big fan of Iron Man 3 and I don’t think it’d be better if it was about a woman. You can’t really make a movie about Superman without making a movie about SuperMAN.

I’m just curious as to why those are the only movies being made.  The movie industry will probably tell you that it is because movies about women don’t make as much.

That may or may to be true but there sure isn’t a lot of data one way or the other, is there?  Catwoman didn’t make any money because it sucked, not because it featured a woman as a protagonist.

Why isn’t there a Black Widow movie in development?  You can’t tell me the legions of Marvel fans wouldn’t like to watch it.  Wonder Woman is also languishing in development hell.

A Black Widow film would probably be all about Hawkeye anyway.

I don’t honestly think filmmakers have any idea how to make movies featuring women as protagonists.  I understand it is difficult but I don’t think anyone actually gives a fuck as long as Man of Steel has a 100MM opening.

And that kind of sucks for anyone who has a daughter, doesn’t it?

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is Off the Rails

Kennedy has long been an Anti-Vaccine crusader and I dislike the anti-vaxx movement with only slightly less zeal than the creationist movement.

I have two children on the autism spectrum. They were both vaccinated and I know two things:

1)  Vaccinating my kids did not make them autistic

2)  Even if it did (and it didn’t), I would rather have autistic children than children with Smallpox or Polio

You think this guy was happy he wasn’t vaccinated?

Kennedy and others like him have been pushing misinformation and, as this article proves, they are willing to name names.  They people they name, however, never actually said what they are claimed to have said.  Nor do the studies they cite actually say what they claim those studies say.

So all he is doing is engaging in character of assassination.

I get that big pharma is theoretically evil but here’s the thing – vaccines are not.  Yes, pharmaceutical companies make money off vaccines.  I guess that’s a price I’m willing to pay to ensure that my kids don’t get the measles.

Claiming vaccines cause autism is to make the claim that you understand a shitload more about autism than all the folks out there researching the condition.

And in the meantime, making people afraid of vaccines is contributing to the rise of diseases we thought had been eradicated.  That’s what I call a lose-lose.

Baptist Church Plans to Dump the Boy Scouts because They Don’t Hate Gay People

The Boy Scouts expected that they would get some pushback from members of the faith community when they chose to accept openly gay scouts.  Good thing, too.  Because they are getting it.

Baptist ministers are saying that they have no choice.  It is not a hate thing.  It’s a morality thing.  They just can’t support the Boy Scouts now that the organization has embraced a morally improper lifestyle by accepting openly gay scouts.

Look at how immoral this possibly gay boy scout looks!

That isn’t hate.  They feel really badly about the whole thing.  It isn’t their fault.  It’s god’s fault!

I mean, sure, Jesus preached forgiveness and all that bullshit but not if you aren’t willing to deny your own sexuality because god doesn’t love you just the way you are.

Yeah.  Fuck those guys.

Arizona State Representative was so Upset an Atheist Rep. Didn’t pray, he Prayed Twice

I missed this one last week, sorry.

So here’s what happened.  Arizona State Representative (and secular humanist) Juan Mendez gave an invocation that did not include God.  They take turns giving the invocation, it was his turn and he gave an invocation based on his beliefs.  Which is totally his fucking right.

Representative Steve Smith was so upset about it, he offered up a special prayer the next day for “repentance of the previous day.”  In addition to a prayer he’d already given.  Because he had to make up for Mendez, I guess.

Oh god, please forgive my fellow legislators for being tolerant of beliefs other than their own. As I’m the only one of them without sin, I’m going to cast the first stone.

Now let’s step back for a moment and ask what the appropriate response would be had Mendez given a Hindu prayer.  Or a Jewish one.  Or an Islamic one.  Would that have been OK because he’d mentioned a god or gods (even if they weren’t the right one)?

Assuming Smith’s response had been the same (two prayers to make up for the lack of a Christian one), would he have taken flak for choosing to disrespect any belief system other than humanism?

I’ll bet people would have been pissed as hell.  Not just Muslims or Jews or whatever other religion he’d chosen to disrespect but Christians as well.

As it is, Smith will be applauded by the religious right for standing up to the godless left even though the godless left has had to tolerate Christian prayer in the Arizona state house for every day except one.

Florida Teenager Faces Felony Charges for Being a Lesbian

Actually, she isn’t facing felony charges for being a lesbian.  She’s facing felony charges for statutory rape because she was having a consensual relationship with a girl who was 14.  When she was 17, that was (at least according to the articles I’ve read), legal.

But she turned 18.  And her girlfriends’ parents immediately had her arrested.

Update:  Apparently it wasn’t legal when she was 17 because if you are under 16, you can’t have consensual sex with anyone in the State of Florida. It would seem they waited until she was 18 so she could be charged as an adult.  Classy.

And the county prosecutor is going for it.  Because the law is all about protecting the innocent and that fourteen year old  was clearly being corrupted by her girlfriend the second she turned 18.  There is, apparently, no nuance in statutory rape laws that takes the age of the offender into account.  ‘Cuz an eighteen year old may be older than a fourteen year old but she is just as much of a child.

Oh sure, you can hold her hand now. But you’d better let it go before you turn eighteen!

If she had been a boy, I’ll bet this would not have happened.

Hey, you folks who are against same-sex marriage and who still think that you aren’t bigots – don’t you think getting an eighteen year old girl expelled from school and possibly putting her in prison because she’s a lesbian seems just a little bit bigoted?

Update:  There is a lot more nuance to this case. I checked my sources before I posted it but bias is always a risk. I’m still annoyed by any situation that could have a child (and yes – an eighteen year old is still a child) sent to jail for fifteen years because of sexual curiousity.  If there is one thing that scares the piss out of us in this country, it is human sexuality.

Minnesotans for Marriage Are Worried that People think They are Bigots

Same-sex marriage is about to be a reality in Minnesota but the folks over at Minnesota for marriage tried their best to lie their way into a victory.

They warned folks that if the marriage law passed, people who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman would be labelled as “bigots” (because they are) and “prosecuted under the law” (which is complete bullshit).

See, the law says that same sex couples can get married.  You don’t have to like it.  There are lots of laws different groups of people don’t like.  Not liking a law is completely legal and nobody is going to prosecute you for it.

I don’t like the fact that churches are tax exempt and yet, nobody has arrested me for thinking that way. I’M BEING PERSECUTED!!!!

Now if your job is to issue marriage licenses and you refuse to issue them to a same sex couple, you might lose your job because they are legally allowed a marriage license.  You don’t get to re-write the law to suit your “deeply held religious beliefs.”

However, suggesting that people will be prosecuted for believing that same-sex marriage is wrong is a great example of inciting homophobia.  All they are doing is trying to make people afraid of homosexuals. They seem to imply that once homosexuals have rights, they are going to trample all over everyone else’s.

That’s what bigots do.

Chris Kluwe Released by the Vikings

I don’t know for certain why he was let go.  I could speculate and a lot of other people have but the fact is the dude is a great voice for change and now he’s on his way out of town.

He’s bigger than the game he plays.  I know that sounds ridiculous given Football is the most profitable professional sport in the world but it is just a sport.  Kluwe tried to use his celebrity to help achieve a higher goal.

What goal could be higher than balancing a football on your middle finger? Get your priorities straight, Chris! Get it? Straight???? Get it?????????

And I’m pretty sure he got fired for it.  I guess you should have waited to speak your mind until you weren’t a professional football player, Chris.

Not a problem now though! Boo-yah!
