Shit that Pissed me off This Week – 6/15

Megachurch Pastor Beats up his Daughter and his Flock Praises him for it

Let me begin by saying that I don’t know if his daugter’s allegations are true.  But let’s just assume for a moment that he did, in fact, “put his hands around her throat and…then slammed her to the ground, punched her and beat her with his shoe. ”

How many parents think that is appropriate behavior towards one’s child?  Teenagers can be a pain in the ass, I get it.

But choking, throwing to the ground and beating with a shoe?

Here’s what one of his supporters who seems to accept his daughters’ allegations had to say:

101 likes for kids getting their ass beat!!!!! God bless America!

Holy shit people!  He was beating the shit out of her before she called the cops!  That isn’t discipline.  That is abuse.

Alphabetical Movie – The Incredibles

As a geek, I like shiny new geek stuff as much as the next guy.  As such, it is easy to declare The Avengers the best super hero movie ever because it is an amazing film.

No doubt, the arguments will then erupt around how I could have forgotten The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man and possibly even Captain America.

Yes, yes.  Those are all fine movies.  I enjoy them all.

Alphabetical Movie – The Incredible Hulk

So, based on box office returns, we’ve all seen The Avengers by now, right?

Thus we are all aware that the best Hulk, by far, is Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.  Eric Banna and Edward Norton both took one look at Ruffalo, threw their jackets over their shoulders and walked wistfully down the highway while Ruffalo smashed the shit out of Loki.

So here’s my question – what the heck happened to Edward Norton, Jr?

Alphabetical movie – Inception

BWAAAAAAAP!

As with many creatively challenging films, the internet is crawling with commentary on Inception.  No film can be truly perfect but on the internet, there is a critical mass at which a film becomes popular enough that it inspires a certain percentage of individuals to rant about why the people who loved the film are fucking wrong goddamit!

Alphabetical Movie – In the Bedroom

The challenge I have with In the Bedroom has nothing to do with the film itself.  The movie is excellent, though emotionally draining.  It is anchored with fantastic performances by Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei.  When it was released, it was even considered a front runner for Best Picture.

What I’m trying to say is that it’s a serious movie – and a very good one. Therin lies the problem.

Because, you see, every time I see the name of the movie, all I do is think of The Village People.

Herein lie the spoiler filled thoughts on Prometheus from one atheist’s viewpoint.

So..you know…don’t click through if you would rather not read about plot points from the movie.  You have been warned.

We each owe a death

We each owe a death — there are no exceptions. But , oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long. – The Green Mile

There is a poigniancy to that quote that resonates with me.  Mortality is something that we cannot ever hope to escape.  Even if medical science completely erases cancer from our bodies.  Even if our lives are extended by another fifty years.  We all owe a death.

It is the price we pay for living.

Michael Matheny died this weekend after a two year battle with cancer.  I knew Michael but I wouldn’t say we were good friends.   He was a tremendously talented musician and he, along with Ken Larson and Lojo Russo formed the band Gallowglass. Read More…

Positively dripping with comedy!

Monday morning means that my peeps at Vilification Tennis have posted new content!  In addition to all the funny stuff my colleagues have submitted, I have two new comedy things to check out.

First is a new Movie Dick article about the MTV Movie Awards.

AND, we did a bonus Podcast this week!  Joseph Scrimshaw came to the basement studio and spent the majority of our 70 minutes vigorously defending Axl Rose.  We talked about other stuff but you will be amazed at how much time we spent on Axl Rose.

Doctor Allegedly Refused Treatment to an HIV Positive Patient

The accusation is that a doctor refused to get an HIV patient his medications because the patient was gay and (I’m paraphrasing) “he deserved it.”

In a culture where preachers are teaching their children to sing songs about how homos are going to hell, this shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise.  People are being told that it is OK to treat homosexuals differently on one topic (marriage) and, therefore, they reach the conclusion that they can treat those people differently in all situations.

The people who think that way are horrible people.  They would probably still be horrible people if they hadn’t been trained to behave this way toward homosexuals.  I think that perhaps we need to re-direct that acrimony towards something more productive.  Like hating Wal-Mart.  Or Ke$ha.
