A Bunch of Teenagers are Running for Governor of Kansas

I’m not pissed about teens running for Governor. I think it’s hilarious that someone finally noticed there is no age restriction to be Governor in Kansas and while I’m pretty sure no teenager is equipped to do the job competently, being seventy hasn’t helped our current President any so what the hell?

Given the current law doesn’t even require a candidate to be human, the legislature is working on a fix but it won’t be in place before the fall elections so Kansas might elect someone who isn’t even old enough to be drafted.

Here’s what pisses me off – every single teenager running to be governor of Kansas is a white male. Some are Republicans. Some are Democrats. A few are members of other parties.  But they are all a bunch of white males.

In Fact, the crowded field includes only one woman. She’s a Democrat and this is Kansas so she probably won’t win.

Oh shit. I’m back in Kansas.

So the real question we should ask here is: why is it that no seventeen year old girl decided to run? I mean, it is clear the law makes that possible given that a dog could run for governor so long as it could file the proper papers.

It seems that, at least in Kansas, young women are learning early that they should not speak up. They are being shown by the young men around them that politics is not a game for women of any age. That the boys know what they are doing.

Who am I kidding? It isn’t just Kansas.

Although the demographics show that more women will be running for office than ever before this year, this one state proves we have a long way to go.

And no, boys, I don’t want you out of politics. I want more women in politicsRead More…

There is a New Division for Health and Human Services

This happened in January so excuse my tardiness.

The new division is the “Conscience and Religious Freedom Division” and it has been put in place to help health care providers avoid consequences for failing to treat people with whom they have fundamental religious disagreements. Like – say – gay people.

The division is, ironically, part of the Office for Civil Rights and when the new division was announced, director Roger Severino said, in part:

No one should be forced to choose between helping sick people and living by one’s deepest moral or religious convictions

No, Roger, they shouldn’t be forced to make that decision. So if they want to be a pharmacist but don’t want to fill prescriptions for birth control, they should be encouraged to find a job where being a judgmental prick doesn’t make it hard to do what they were hired to do.

Working here, for example, wouldn’t be any kind of problem.

Medical professionals are supposed to want the job because they want to help people. Not because they want to help some people. And the government certainly shouldn’t be in the business of protecting assholes who don’t want to operate on a gay man because he’s a gay man.

Welcome to the religious freedom crusade. It is the right wing Christianity tantrum that has been started in the wake of legalized same sex marriage. Those who want to push their own moral code on others have been told they don’t get to do that on a grand scale so they figure they would like to make it personal.

Sure, you two gentlemen can get married. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it and to prove it, I’m going to refuse to treat one of you. Or refuse to sell you a wedding cake. Or refuse to give you CPR. And I want to be protected because GOD.

White House Defends Senior Official Who is a Serial Abuser

I know the headline would make you think that I’m talking about our President but I think that it is important to note he is a sexual predator. While he may also be physically abusive, I think the odds of that are slim because it would require him to engage in strenuous physical activity.

No – that is not a dig on his weight. I’m just saying that I think he’s lazy.

However, this week it came to light that White House staff Secretary Rob Porter physically abused both of his ex-wives.

Now I now the narrative is to say “look – we all know that when a woman accuses a Democrat of being physically or sexually abusive, it has to be the truth. But this is a Republican and members of the Republican party are only accused of such activities as part of a massive plot perpetuated by the liberal media.”

Did you know if you type Liberal Media Plot into a Google Search, you get a ton of pictures of Rush Limbaugh?

That is certainly the narrative the White House seems to favor as they rally behind Porter and say he’s very good at his job and they didn’t know his home life included regular assault and battery.

At least not before last fall.  They knew last fall.  So maybe they were surprised then. But they aren’t surprised now.

Look, I don’t know that every transgression one commits in life should necessarily prevent one from holding a job. Using marijuana, for instance, should not result in being raped by cops (see below). But being someone who regularly beats women? I don’t think you should be able to work in the White House.

And I definitely don’t think the White House should be defending your sorry ass.

After Historic wins for Transgender Candidates, a Minnesota Politician is a Douche on Twitter

It should be no surprise that Twitter is where people go to be insufferable assholes. I mean, our President has made it his career (because he clearly doesn’t enjoy being President).

This week, off-year elections went pretty well for the non ruling party. I mean we are looking mostly at city council races, mayoral races, and a few governor races but still, the Republicans didn’t do great.

One could argue that happens when the highest ranking member of your party is an incompetent, bigoted sexual predator but perhaps that’s just me.

In case you were wondering, this is the incompetent, bigoted sexual predator I was taking about.

In Minnesota, Representative Mary Franson was a bit disappointed by the fact four transgender candidates won elections this year so she took to Twitter. Because that’s what you do when you want to make sure as many people as possible know you’re a transphobic jackass.

She tweeted “A guy who thinks he’s a girl is still a guy with a mental health condition.”

Which was her way of saying “fuck these transgender candidates, I’m going to publicly call them crazy.”

She didn’t call them “crazy,” of course. She used the more acceptable term “mental health condition.”  Which I suppose I should applaud.

But everyone knew she meant crazy.  And in an environment where the conservative talking points around gun violence are always about mental health, there is a veiled implication these people are one step away from shooting up a school.

Would she have made the same tweet if even one of these candidates was a Republican?

My guess is yes. Because she’s an awful person and if she wasn’t a Republican state representative in a heavily conservative district, she’d probably be out of a job in the next election cycle. But she is. So we’re stuck with her until she decides to quit.

Sigh.

Kevin Sorbo’s Politics

Sorbo is a Conservative Christian and while I don’t agree with him on…well…most anything in the political arena, that’s his right.  So it doesn’t piss me off that he is speaking at a big old anti GLBTQ  “values voters” conference more that it pisses me off that the conference exists.

I will note that twice divorced Donald Trump is also speaking at the “values voters” conference so I begin to wonder exactly which “values” are important to these folks.  Apparently dumping your wife for a younger model is a completely acceptable value.

But Sorbo, star of the immensely popular (in Conservative Christian circles) but objectively horrible God is Not Dead, is outspoken about one thing that really bothers me – how persecuted he is for being a Christian.

In the article linked above, he talks about how he had trouble getting jobs after he “came out” as a Conservative Christian. I mean, his acting in “Hercules” was amazing so he should have been working all the time. I don’t know when he “came out” but I see he was in an obscure series called “Andromeda” for five years.

He was also in Kull the Conqueror. If you’ve seen it, I’m very sorry.

I mean, did David Schwimmer “come out” as a Conservative Christian?  Because he hasn’t had a ton of work since “Friends” went off the air.

How about every actress in Hollywood who is over forty?  Did all of them “come out” as Conservative Christians?

Sorbo’s bullshit idea that he had trouble getting work because of his Christianity doesn’t hold up to the number of credits on his resume.  On the other hand, given how many of those credits are shitty Christian apologist films, his narrative is probably very useful in getting him roles in those kinds of films.

And I’ll bet those roles pay.

Poor Kevin Sorbo.

North Carolina Church Reportedly Importing Slaves from Brazil

Post racial society, huh?

This report, which the church very pointedly doesn’t deny in it’s vehement tirade against the news organization that broke the story, suggests some troubling things.

Now I know we could all simply dismiss this entire mess because people aren’t that awful but history tells us that, yes, people can really be that awful.  There is currently a person that awful working in the white house.  And our President regularly listens to what Mr. Bannon has to say.

America is, we are told, the greatest country in the history of countries (sure we are) so we ought to be super upset about this entire problem.  However, with the possible exception of Vatican City, we are the most smugly Christian country in the history of countries and that means any report like this must be viewed with suspicion because Christians just don’t do that sort of thing!

And to be fair, most Christians don’t do that sort of thing.  We should really get upset, though, when some self professed Christians actually do that sort of thing.

Remember how we all got super upset about this story five years after it broke?

The response so far seems tepid.  It isn’t the sort of “what the FUCK” kind of response you like to see when a church is accused of enslaving people.  I mean the health care vote is a big deal and it affects all Americans so I understand why we aren’t quite as concerned about a few Brazilians.

Once we get this health care thing sorted out, though, can we spare a few thoughts for people tricked into slavery?

Oh fuck.  We’re never going to be done sorting out this health care thing, are we?

Wisconsin Politician Says it is a Fact that the Earth is 6000 Years Old

Forgetting for a moment that facts are things that are true, Wisconsin State Representative Jesse Kremer stated that a biology professor could not counter a student’s claim that the earth is 6000 years old because that is a fact.

I know that some embarrassing percentage of Americans actually believe there is evidence to support the notion that the Earth is younger than written history.  In this case, “embarrassing” means “more than none.”

Home schooling taught me everything I need to know about science!

Further, I know those people vote.  And I know some of those people run for office.  I even know some of them get elected.  I just have a real problem with the idea their beliefs are so mainstream as to allow them to suffer no ill consequences from saying them out loud.  This guy isn’t going to have any trouble being re-elected.

There is going to be a huge contingency of people saying he’s brave for speaking truth as power.

Except – and I can’t stress this enough – it isn’t truth.  It’s bullshit.

You can believe the formation of the Earth was a long miracle without dismissing all of the evidence that exists.  There is not a single scientific fact that supports it was a short one.

Shit that Pissed me Off – 5/19

Note – I was out-of-town last week so I have two weeks of stupid shit piled up.  I probably won’t get to all of it so I apologize if your favorite annoying thing didn’t make the cut.

A Creationist Scientist is Suing the Grand Canyon

Andrew Snelling is a Geologist who is also a creationist.  This in itself makes no sense because in order to be both, you need to basically ignore all the evidence that would make you a credible geologist.  But he’s got a PhD so we have to accept that he knows stuff about Geology even if he doesn’t actually believe any of it.

So he wanted to do some research, including collecting samples, in the Grand Canyon.  Such things are allowed but you have to apply to do so and his application was rejected.

So he’s suing for religious discrimination.  You know, because Christians have it so hard in our country.

Heh.  Geologist.  So hard.  Get it?

Anyway, his claim was rejected because it was presumed he would use the samples to “disprove” existing science about the Grand Canyon and since the Grand Canyon is, you know, a protected landmark, they don’t want people taking rock samples to do bad science.  Sounds like his application didn’t really say what he was going to use the samples for, either.

Which is probably because he knew he couldn’t say “I’m going to use the samples to prove the Grand Canyon is no more than 6000 years old even though recorded human history goes back further than that and I’m a fucking idiot.”

So he basically asked to take samples without really telling anyone why and they said “no – you can’t just take samples because you have a degree in Geology.  You have to have a reason.”

And he’s responding “you hate me because I’m a Christian!  I’m going to sue.”

We don’t hate him because he’s a Christian.  We hate him because he uses his Christianity as an excuse to be a bad scientist.

San Antonio Mayor Implies Atheism Causes Poverty

Actually, that’s not what she said.  A lot of Atheists are kind of up in arms and the thing is, I think what she said is worse than if she just targeted atheists.

Asked what causes poverty, she responded:

To me, it’s broken people. People not being in a relationship with their Creator, and therefore, not being in good relationship with their families and their communities, and not being productive members of society. I think that’s the ultimate answer.

So yeah, she could be talking about atheists.  But let’s assume, for a moment, that what she meant was broader.  She meant that people are poor because they don’t have a good relationship with god.  God literally looks down from heaven (or up from heaven given that Earth is a sphere and we don’t actually know where heaven is located) and says “those people don’t go to church enough.  I’m going to make them poor.”

I guess that makes sense if the god we are talking about is Loki.

It suggests that the only people who are productive members of society are people who have a good relationship with their creator. That would obviously exclude people like Bill Gates, who is an open atheist.  He’s clearly not being productive.

It would also include people who call themselves Christians but don’t really go to church or do much to support their faith.

Basically, she’s blaming poverty on a lack of belief in god.

It seems silly to me given that Jesus was poor and I thought his relationship with god was supposed to be pretty solid.  Poverty is not caused by god.  It is caused by people.  People who, like San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor, treat poverty as some sort of punishment which people deserve.

They suggest that if we just get poor people to church, god will fix them.  Never mind that the poorest states in our nation are some of the most faithful.  Faith has nothing to do with poverty.  Belief in god doesn’t make you rich or poor any more than atheism makes you rich or poor.

Her answer is insulting to poor people.  And atheists.  And people of faith.  When it comes to hitting a tone-deaf home run, she killed it.

For Easter, Someone Decided to Vandalize an Atheist’s Truck

In Crookston, Minnesota, there aren’t a lot of atheists, I’ll wager.  I would go so far as to guess even fewer are out about it.

Jeff Carter had a couple of magnetic bumper stickers on his truck that made it clear he’s an atheist.  That’s cool, right?  I mean, one truck with a few atheist slogans is hardly a problem when there are probably dozens (or hundreds – I didn’t bother to look up the population of Crookston*) of vehicles with Christian bumper stickers in the same town.

Apparently flaunting your atheism in Crookston is not cool, though.  At least not cool to the (I assume) Christians who vandalized Carter’s truck.

Jesus rose from the dead! Praise god! Let’s go write some Christian shit on an atheist’s truck!

How do we know they are Christians?  Because they wrote phrases like “Jesus is Great” and “God is Life” on his truck.  Now I suppose it is possible that a couple of Crookston Jews pissed off at Carter’s atheism but decided they should frame some Christians but that might stretch the imagination a bit too far.

And look – I know these assholes are not indicative of almost every other Christian in the country.  Even the ones who voted for Donald Trump.  They are outliers.

They serve as a reminder, though.  The next time a Christian complains about how they are being oppressed by modern society, remember that there aren’t a lot of atheists going around vandalizing cars with Christian bumper stickers.

I assume because they aren’t really sure what to write on the car.  “Science is great?”  “I totally came from a monkey (even though I didn’t – monkeys and I share a common ancestor)?” “Atheists make better cookies (citation needed)?”

*I lied – It’s 7,904
