Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients is a Huge Bust
Government needs to be smaller, they tell us. It isn’t that I disagree with that basic sentiment but I don’t understand why there is a huge push from the right to test welfare recipients for drug use.
I mean, I understand the basic (dumb) argument. We don’t want people receiving handouts to be using those handouts to fund a drug habit. Better that they receive zero money and zero treatment and they die in an opium den, I guess. Or maybe they will just have their legs broken because they can’t pay their dealer.
Anyway, the problem isn’t the rationale so much as the results. The number of drug users being caught is so low, it doesn’t come close to saving the government the money it is spending on catching the drug users. Has anyone thought about rebranding the “war on drugs” as a “limited police action” on drugs.
Throw down your pot and put your leaves up! DO IT NOW!
So instead of small government, we have big government looking for evidence of drug abuse and finding comparatively little. Even if estimates are correct and 8% of welfare recipients are drug abusers, that leaves most welfare recipients in the position of being assumed guilty until a drug test proves otherwise.
Is it legal? Well I’m pretty sure John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Antonin Scalia think so.
Which means it may be legal but it is almost certainly a bad idea.

Hasbro Seems to Have Forgotten Someone
Hasbro has announced they are releasing a line of 24 Star Wars figures to coincide with the digital re-release of the films. That is awesome because I can buy them for my kid. And then play with them myself.
However, they seem to have forgotten the most badass character in the original trilogy.
Nope. Han is there. So is Chewbacca.
Do I have to hide some plans inside a droid to help you figure it out?
Where, I ask you, is Princess Leia? They can include a two fucking battle droids but can’t seem to include one of the most important characters from the original trilogy?
Memo to Hasbro: nobody gives a shit about battle droids. Nobody.
I realize the Star Wars universe is not full of women but if you can find room for Padme Amidala in your 24 figures, you can sure as hell find room for Leia.

Idiot Climbs a Rock, Injures Himself and Sues the City for Creating Unsafe Conditions
This moron is probably going to win, too.
He saw a rock sculpture and thought it looked like a lot of fun to climb around on it. I don’t blame him. I would have thought the same thing. I would need a taser and some bungee cords to stop my kids from climbing on something like that.
Here’s a picture of one of my kids on a rock at Yosemite National Park. There are a lot of rocks at Yosemite National Park and he’s climbed on damn near every one of them.
There were no signs telling him he couldn’t so he jumped on the thing, landed awkwardly and tore his Achilles tendon. Ouch!
Now he’s suing the city. Because he did a reckless thing and hurt himself. Also because he probably has crappy health insurance.
Look dude, if you are going to jump on a rock because it looks like fun, you need to recognize the risks. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t jump on the fucking rock.
The only unsafe condition the city created was they one they created when they allowed you to leave your house every morning.

Colorado Politician Creates a Bill Based on a Satirical Article
I’m going to briefly address the absurdity of a politician freaking out over a bullshit article suggesting that people are using food stamps to buy pot in Colorado. So convinced was she that this was actually happening that she wrote a law designed to ensure that it wouldn’t happen.
That’s idiotic.
But what the hell is with Fox News and other conservatives falling all over each other to freak out about legalized pot? Does this actually spell the decline and death of Western Civilization? I ask this as someone who has never smoked pot, doesn’t expect he ever will and doesn’t give a crap if someone else wants to.

Legalized pot? How can we make it so easy for young people to get mind altering substances????
I thought Republicans are supposed to be the party of small government and yet they are the ones completely horrified at the idea of saving money in the war on drugs by cutting back on the number of fronts where we are fighting.
I’d think their problem would be more focused on the regulation of the pot industry. Maybe the pot dealers don’t have enough freedom and the assumption is they’d be more free with a deregulated but illegal industry? Or legalized pot is good as long as pot growers can do whatever the fuck they want?
It’s like they are smoking conservativism but they aren’t inhaling.

Fox News Lies with Statistics
Normally I don’t bother writing about Fox news because they are a biased source and who really cares when they say stupid shit? The people who watch and believe Fox news will continue to watch and believe Fox news no matter how often the bias is shown.
But bad graphs really annoy me, you know?
Take this one:
HOLY FUCK! Look how many more people are on Welfare than have full time jobs! That’s a huge amount of….waitaminnit.
Actually, that’s only about 900,000 people but it looks like a whole lot more than that because of the scale they chose for their Y axis. When you look more closely, you will see there is actually no scale on their Y Axis. If we assume the bar on the right is equal to 101.7 million, the bar on the left, which is five times as big, ought to be equal to over 500 million. But it isn’t.
Because the axis doesn’t have a scale. They just picked a bigger bar and a littler bar and slapped numbers on them.
Their numbers, by the way, are also total bullshit. Even if they got the numbers right, though, this graph would be a travesty.
Being biased is one thing. Being biased and stupid is unacceptable.
