Judge Forces Mom Change Her Son’s Name Because She Was Incapable of Making a Rational Decision
An appeals court had to overturn this idiotic ruling so I guess sometimes the judicial system works. Eventually.
If we are to believe this “irrational” mother’s story, she chose to give her child her own last name after the father abused her during the pregnancy. The judge in the case felt that she just wasn’t in the right mind to make that sort of decision and, I guess, thought it would case harm to the child if the child didn’t have his father’s last name.
I’ll bet the judge would have ruled differently if the father’s last name was HITLER!!!
An appeals court saw it differently and apparently felt the judge in the case was far more irrational than the mother.
This last name thing is problematic to begin with. I like my last name so when I got married, I kept it. That’s totally fine because I’m a dude and nobody questions when a man wants to keep his name.
Nobody questions when parents given their child the father’s last name.
But if a woman wants to keep her last name or give her last name to a child, well then it is time to take the case to court, I guess.
It’s a double standard. And a stupid one.

All this Hatred of the Common Core
The particular article I linked to calls it “Obama’s Common Core” even though the President had nothing to do with it. However, if you are conservative and don’t like something in government, you need to blame it on Obama.
Common core mathematics actually tries to teach kids how to do math the same way we already do it in our heads. As has been explained every time someone new complains about Common Core.
Suddenly, the whole thing has become a liberal vs. conservative thing. Look at how these liberals are messing up education with their weird math stuff!
Look at all these liberal numbers! Screw diversity! We are in a post-racial-numbers society!
Common core is a tool kids can use to learn math. Any good teacher will tell you that it is not the only tool and the more tools we give kids, the better the odds will be that they can learn.
Common core isn’t turning your kids into Democrats! Obama doesn’t want your kids to be bad at math.
He just wants them to commit voter fraud! They don’t teach that in Math class.

Ray Rice and the NFL
Even if you don’t follow sports, you probably know about the video that shows Ray Rice hitting his then fiancée and knocking her unconscious. Lots of people have offered their opinion, including Keith Olbermann, John Stewart, and Peter King.
What is messed up is the idea that the NFL, which is one of the most powerful corporate entities in the world, somehow didn’t get a copy of the video first. I don’t even understand how that is possible. Admitting such a thing means they are either lying or they didn’t really give a shit about what was on the video.
If they gave a shit about what happened to Janay Rice, they wouldn’t have interviewed her about the incident while she was sitting next to the man who had hit her.
If they understood anything about the mental state of an abuse victim, they would have recognized the behavior of someone who has probably been struck more than once. They would have interviewed her on her own, hopefully with a counselor present. Not only didn’t they understand, they didn’t care.
Just forget about it and watch football, folks! Nothing to see here!
That’s the crux of all of this. They don’t give a shit about the abuse. They give a shit about their image. So long as we didn’t have video showing the actual punch that knocked Janay Rice out, the NFL thought they could get away with a two game penalty because the public would be too focused on the game to think about domestic violence
The failure here was caused by a bunch of people who cared more about their business than anything else. Keep that in mind as this situation continues to unfold. Any decision they make will not be governed by what is best for Janay Rice. Or even Ray Rice.
It will be governed by what is best for the NFL.

The Whole Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Thing
The problem is that there is a dialogue focused on whether or not Lawrence (and other celebrities) are to blame for the theft of their personal pictures.
Well let’s stop and think about this for a mom…NO!
I am writing this blog post on a laptop computer that is valuable. Now you, the reader, know I have a laptop computer you could sell for money. If you came over to my house, broke in and stole my computer would it be my fault because I made you aware that I owned it?
It looks a little bit like this
NO! That’s what we call theft! There are all sorts of laws about that shit.
It is not my fault for owning a computer any more that it is Lawrence’s fault that she owned nude photographs of herself (if indeed those are photographs of her – which she denies).
Theft is a crime. Owning things people want to steal is not.

Canadian School Board Candidate Wants Creationism Taught in Schools
Her picture looks adorable. I’m sure she’s twenty. Maybe.
She is firmly of the opinion that they should teach the controversy (that doesn’t exist). She also says that schools should focus on the “basics” of education.
Like evolution, right?
No no no no no no no no!
Well, she thinks it should be taught in science classrooms alongside creationism. She also thinks sex education should be abstinence only because that is also “basic.”
As basic as Abstinence-Bible-Contraceptives are tools of the Devil!
Is this barely not-teenager going to be elected? I doubt it.
And yet I’m tired of living in a world where people continue to believe that creationism should be given the same amount of time in the classroom. And I’m tired of living in a world where we continue to argue about abstinence-only sex education when the evidence clearly shows it is inadequate.

Awful People Who Don’t Deserve Pets Are Abandoning Animals Because They Don’t Look Good In Pictures
All of my cats are humane society cats. The hardest part of adopting a cat from the humane society is reading the reasons the cat is there. One of my cats was abandoned when her owners moved. They left her to starve to death. If I ever met the people who did that to her, I’d want to punch them in the face.
While the headline for this article is misleading, I’m still annoyed to learn there are a large number of black cats who aren’t being adopted because people are shallow. You can’t find a good pet with a picture. You have to meet the animal and see if their personality meshes with yours.
Fair is fair. You have to send the cat your picture to see if he poops on it or not.
The thing about people who abandon animals is they all have excuses. Aside from allergies, though, most excuses come down to failure to take responsibility for the animal. Pets are a responsibility and not a right. You have to be prepared to scoop up their shit and feed them and pay attention to them.
If you didn’t know that before you picked the animal up, the animal that needs to be returned is you.

Syrians are Destroying Sculptures Because Allah
Dear everyone in the world: Just because your particular strain of god does not approve of something is no reason to take that thing away from the rest of us.
When you destroy a sculpture that is thousands of years old, you can’t just make a new one.
This has existed for thousands of years and Allah has done nothing about it. Therefore we must!
Unfortunately, this sculpture ended up in one of those places where the prevailing belief system says that historical significance is not a good enough reason to keep something around if there is a face on it.
So thanks, religious extremists, for taking something away from the rest of the world because you believe it will lead to eternal damnation! You guys are the best!

A Lot of People are Freaking out About Immigrant Children
Here’s what I genuinely don’t understand:
The far right is super concerned about the rights of unborn children.
Once the kids are born, though, they don’t really give a fuck. Especially if those kids weren’t born in America.
In this case, we have a Republican candidate so anxious to show how anti-immigrant he is, he stages a protest with a busload of immigrant kids. Too bad it turns out the kids were actually from a YMCA camp. Apparently they use school busses to move all kinds of kids around. Who knew?
Look! Its a school bus! I’ll bet there are illegal immigrants in there!
Seriously, does anyone do research before setting up a photo-op?
But more seriously, these are children! This immigration “crisis” is bullshit election year stuff. There are all sorts of people crossing our borders all the time. Politicians only care every two years.
The rest of the time, they only care if there are enough immigrants around to pick their food, cook their food, and clean their houses. And they don’t give a shit about how many of them are on school busses.

I get that social conservatives don’t understand anything about homosexuality. How else can you justify someone claiming that sperm injected anally has an enzyme that burns…um….something and causes immune deficiency?
Clearly they don’t understand anything about enzymes either. Or sperm. Or anuses.
Apparently it only has this effect on male anuses. Or maybe this dude doesn’t believe there is such a thing as a woman who enjoys anal sex.

What continues to amaze me is how people like this guy continue to get annoyed when people like me call them homophobic.

Sound Design Eliminated From the Tony Awards
I missed this one last week. Bad form for a theatre person.
The awards were eliminated because, apparently, the people voting had no idea what sound design actually is or how to evaluate it. So sort of like Oscar voters and Best original song. Except nobody in the Academy gives a shit that none of them have any taste in music.
We all know “Let it Go” won simply because it was the only song any of them had heard. Right?
So instead of recognizing artists who contribute to theatrical production, they threw up their hands and told everyone that figuring out what a sound designer does is too hard. We can’t give them an award if we don’t understand what they do.
Now, the folks running the Tonys have said they will be giving out special awards since they understand sound design better than the voters.
Last thing you would like to do is teach people what a sound designer does. Better to just tell them you’ll handle it yourself.
