Alphabetical Movie – It Happened One Night

You can’t really escape sexism in most movies but the older the movie, the more likely that the sexism will be overt.  Just like the racism in classic films, though, everyone involved in making the films was oblivious to what they were doing.

Nobody was trying to be sexist.  They just were.  The fact that women weren’t actually delicate flowers who would faint at the slightest provocation didn’t change the fact that women in film were that way.  Easiest way to facilitate the monster carrying his victim?  Have her faint!

That isn’t really sexism, right?  It’s just practical.

Alphabetical Movie – Iron Man 2

So I’m thinking about the trajectory of late career revivals for actors.  It seems to me that these revivals must include, at some point, an appearance as a villain in a Super Hero movie.

Take Mickey Roarke.

His career was completely in the toilet until his Oscar nominated turn in The Wrestler. Suddenly, the guy has a career again.  Good for him.  The Wrestler was a good movie and he was amazing.

New Geeks Without God Podcast!

Yes, it’s Tuesday morning and that means a new Geeks Without God podcast is up at our website just this morning!  This week we have a discussion with Joshua Humprhey about The Amazing Meeting, which he attended in 2011 and 2012.  He really made us want to go.  Maybe we need to do a kickstarter to fund a GWG trip to Vegas so we can record a bunch of podcasts there!

Anyway, listen to the podcast because it’s awesome!  Or should I say AMAZING???

Monday Morning Comedy!

I wrote an article for the Vilification Tennis website this week!

I actually wrote it quite some time ago but it wasn’t time sensitive so it’s been gathering dust on the comedy shelf.  This week, it finally sees the light of day!

So please, go over and read it.  I think it’s pretty darned amusing.

Shit that Pissed me off This Week – 9/7

Michele Bachmann is Still from Minnesota

This week, Bachmann suggested that the common American can’t relate to Obama because he’s so rich.

That was certainly an interesting thing to say given that her parties’ nominee is somewhere around one hundred times richer than Obama.  Based on her statement, I would assume that Bachmann believes that Romney is one hundred times more out of touch with the average American than Obama.

I would consider it fair if she’d said that Obama is a little out of touch with the average American because he lives here:

This house is a lot nicer than mine

Bachmann is out of touch with the average American because she is crazy.

The Dark Knight Rises – Spoileriffic

I wasn’t able to see The Dark Knight Rises until Tuesday.  I’ve managed to stay almost completely free of spoilers for the film, which is rare for me.

If I don’t see a movie early in the run, I don’t care about spoilers.  I’ve enjoyed movies when I’ve known “too much” as much as movies when I’ve gone in with a blank slate.  A good movie is a good movie.

Sure, Cabin in the Woods is a better film if you go in completely blind.  But it’s a good movie anyway.  There’s an additional layer of enjoyment if you don’t know anything going into the film but I still look forward to watching it again.

Let’s face it.  Every viewing after the first is filled with spoilers.

I’m getting seriously off track.

I didn’t need to be spoiler free to see The Dark Knight Rises but I’m glad I was.  If you haven’t seen it yet and would prefer to avoid spoilers, read no further.  Yeah, I just spent all that time warning you to stop reading this post if you haven’t seen the film.

Sorry about that.

What the Fuck is Wrong with People?

I wrote about the conversation surrounding Atheism Plus a few weeks ago.  In general, I like the idea.  I don’t think it needs to be all of what being an atheist is about (neither does anyone else) but I think it’s a good idea and I don’t understand the vitriol that is aimed at the people spearheading the idea.

That vitriol has managed to silence one of the voices behind that movement (at least for a time) and now I’m going to ask what the fuck is wrong with you people?

Two New Podcasts! AH HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!

Hey everyone!  Because of Labor day, you can listen to two new podcasts in which I prominently feature!

First up is our newest installment of Geeks Without God in which we talk about the 1960’s film Inherit the Wind starring Spencer Tracy and Fredrick March.  It’s one of my favorite films and had a lot to do with shaping my opinions regarding religion and evolution.  The podcast is really interesting (I think) and hopefully it’ll convince folks who haven’t seen the movie to check it out!  So give it a listen!

Also, we have a new Vilification Tennis podcast.  We finally got Lauren, our youngest vilifier, on the Podcast and she initiated a fascinating discussion about driving.  She doesn’t want to get her license and the rest of us try to convince her that she should by telling her horror stories about our experiences as young drivers.  It doesn’t seem to work.  We also talked about a lot of other stuff.  Enjoy!

Shit that Pissed me Off this Week – 8/31

Apologies to those hoping for lots of stuff from the Republican National Convention.  I just can’t get to riled up about a bunch of rah-rah speeches meant to serve as a sort of infomercial for the Republican product.  I get as annoyed by the Republican convention as I get excited by the Democratic convention.

Not much at all.

Boy, that Paul Ryan is a lying douchebag, though.

Mitt Romney Pandered to the Birthers?

I have to hand it to Romney.  Up to this point in the campaign, I haven’t given a shit about what he’s had to say because he’s been so unerringly dull.  He finally said something (sort of) interesting when he pointed out that nobody has asked to see his birth certificate.

You know why that is, right Mitt?  It’s because you are white.

Hey Mitt – if you could only ask to see one of these two guys’ birth certificates, which one would you ask?

I think we should start asking to see Mitt’s birth certificate, don’t you?  Hey Mitt, where the fuck is your long form birth certificate?  How do we know you aren’t Canadian?  Or from some Nordic country?  WE DEMAND TO KNOW!!!!
