Molly on the Booth Babe Issue

Molly wrote a great article over at Geeks Without God about Joe Peacock’s objection to booth babes.

Speaking as a ranter myself, I’m a big fan of Molly’s ranty style.  Go read!

Shit that Pissed me Off This Week – 7/27

Some guy kills a bunch of people in a Movie Theatre and Some other guy on Facebook has a Solution

So first off, thanks for taking a horrible tragedy and making it all about your agenda.  Well done.

This is not a guns are awesome/guns are awful thing.  I’ve talked about that before.  This is a “what are you – stupid?” thing.

You don’t know what the fuck you are talking about because the guy released tear gas into the theatre and then opened fire.  If you were in that theater with a gun, you would have needed to get a clear shot at the killer so that you wouldn’t kill any of the panicking crowd that is all around him.  In a theatre filled with tear gas. Your odds of killing an innocent bystander are probably just as high or higher than your odds of killing the bad guy.

It’s great to think that if you were there, you would have saved more people.  We all want to believe that.  It’s bullshit.  John McLean is a character in a movie.

A guy walks into a packed theatre, fills it with smoke and starts shooting, a bunch of people are going to die.  If you were there and you had a gun, you wouldn’t have stopped it from happening.  You are not Rambo.

Harassment – You Just Don’t Get it

There is a big debate in the skeptical community over harassment.  I’ve been thinking (and reading) about it a lot.  I have friends who think that it is a big deal and I have friends who think that it is obnoxious.

So here’s the thing:  the whole debate is between two groups of people.

On one side, you have women (and men) who have been made to feel uncomfortable at large-scale skeptical events (as well as those who sympathize).

On the other side, you have people who haven’t.

Alphabetical Movie – Intolerable Cruelty

It’s been a slow week of blogging for me.  I’ve got these shows coming up – perhaps you’ve heard of them?

So Intolerable Cruelty is about two people who are so much better looking than everyone else in the world, they could only be destined for each other.  In fact, I think the title refers to the cruelty the Coen Brothers are inflicting on their audience by forcing them to remember they will never be as attractive as George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

I’m not talking sexy.  I’m talking attractive.

Two new podcasts for you!

Tuesday morning means a new Geeks Without God is live!  This week, we talked about the religious affiliation of Batman as well as other superheroes.  It’s our first podcast without a guest so we turned the spotlight on ourselves and I had to answer our five questions.  I do my best to explain the Alphabetical Movie Project.

Also up this week, a TC Theater podcast about The Complete Works of William Shatner (abridged).  Josh interviewed Bill and I about the show and I would like to think we sound somewhat intelligent about the whole thing!

New Stuff I wrote

We have a new podcast up over at the Vilification Tennis website this morning along with lots of other new content!  This week’s podcast got into some pretty deep discussion about comic theory including what makes Geek humor work so well and, in the wake of the Colorado shootings, we ask how soon it is too soon to joke about tragic events.

Interestingly enough, I also wrote a Movie Dick article this week about The Dark Knight Rises.  It has nothing to do with the shooting and was written before that event ever took place.  Somehow, I still think that someone will tell me that posting it was in the worst possible taste…

Shit that Pissed Me off This Week 7/20

I note that yes, the shooting in Colorado pissed me off.  But I’m not going to write about it because fuck that guy.  This is all the 1’s and 0’s I’m going to commit to him.

The Mitt Romney Bain Debacle

What pisses me off is that there is no there there.  I’m a liberal.  I don’t like Romney.

Yet if you read the article linked above that quotes both anonymous and public sources who are Democrats that Support Obama, this whole thing appears to be much ado about nothing.

The Bain issue appears to be the Democratic equivalent of a swiftboat campaign.  There are a lot of good reasons why Romney shouldn’t be our next President.  If there is an honest belief he can’t be beaten on those grounds, the problem is with our campaign.

Just look at the guy! I’m telling you, he’s an Auton!

I don’t like it when Republicans lie and obscure facts because I don’t agree with the majority of their agenda and if people really understood it, I don’t think a lot of others would either.

What I really hate, though, is when Democrats do the same thing.  I know – they do it all the time.

But I agree with them most of the time and I wish they would figure out how to get people to understand their point of view without resorting to misdirection.

ANOTHER Fringe Show?

My producing partner, John Newstrom, was drawn dead last in the Fringe lottery this year.  As a result, I agreed to produce his show idea, The Complete Works of William Shatner.  I was already committed to writing the show and my idea was a pretty simple little improvisational structure I’ve wanted to do at the Fringe for a couple years.

It’s easy to produce and I figured that I could wait and produce it next year.

When is a Personal Opinion a Business Practice?

Yesterday evening, my friend Cargill decided to poke the bear.  In response to the internet vitriol over Chick-Fil-A, he tweeted the following:

Boycotting a business over their business practices is the democratic free market in action. Doing so over their personal opinions is not.

By boycotting a business over personal opinions, you are saying it is okay to threaten someone’s livelihood if they don’t think like you.

Let’s start by pointing out that Cargill isn’t a dick.  Yes, he’s a Republican and I’m a left-of-Democrat liberal but he and I actually agree on most social political matters and even some economic ones.   I don’t fully agree with him here, although I do see what he is saying and understand the point he’s trying to make.

He’s a good guy and he argues fairly.  I’m not trying to take him down.  He got me to think and that is a good thing.  He’s very good at it.

But this isn’t an argument that could be fairly explored over Twitter.

Alphabetical Movie – Insomnia

I’m trying to be a good geek.  Really.  I love a good Super Hero film and Christopher Nolan has made two of the best already.  I’m super jazzed for The Dark Knight Rises.  I don’t know if it is going to be great but I want it to be great.

I have a lot of faith that Nolan can deliver.

So it is with almost a whisper I admit that I don’t think The Dark Knight is Nolan’s best film.

I think it’s Insomnia.
