Shit That Pissed me Off – 10/30

The Internet Rushes to Defend a Cop Who Beat up a Kid

I’m very careful to research the stuff I post for this blog.  I want to make sure I understand the complete story before I rage against something that isn’t nearly as bad as it first appears.  If my information comes from addicting info, I make sure I find another source.

So when a cell phone video of a “school resource officer” throwing a teenager around surfaced, you’d think I would look for the other side of the story.

Nope.

See it literally doesn’t matter what the student was doing wrong prior to the video.  The extremely violent action was not provoked by a kid sitting at a desk.  Even a kid refusing to leave the classroom.  The officer lost his cool and physically assaulted a child.

To enter a dialogue saying “well she must have done something to deserve that action” ignores the fact that circumstances in which someone deserves to be beaten up are extremely rare.

Did Apollo Creed deserve to be beaten up by Rocky? Or Rocky by Apollo? If only they had just talked it out.

Did Apollo Creed deserve to be beaten up by Rocky? Or Rocky by Apollo? If only they had just talked it out.

If the assault had been committed by a guy who wasn’t in uniform, nobody would be trying to make excuses for his act.  But he’s a cop so he clearly did everything right and his actions shouldn’t be questioned, right?

No.

He’s a cop.  So he should know better.

And the rest of us should stop trying to find an excuse to blame the victim.  When someone starts hitting a person who is not hitting back, the person doing the hitting is to blame.

Death Threats: The Mic Drop of the Internet

6a00d8341c652b53ef0133f4fe59e7970b-800wiLately I’ve been noticing that the default response to someone doing something you dislike on the internet is to send them a death threat.

Say you aren’t going to serve pizza to gay people?

Death threat!

Say you ARE going to serve pizza to gay people?

Death threat!

Be a woman with an opinion that you choose to say out loud?

Death threat! Rape Threat!  Public exposure of your address, phone number, and place of business!  But you shouldn’t take it so personally!

It has become clear a death threat is the internet equivalent of a mic drop.

Think you have a cogent argument?  I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!

BOOM!  Your argument is invalid!

Shit that Pissed me off – 2/6

A Totally Insane Video By a Gamergater

Brianna Wu is a frequent target of Gamergate supporters because she, rightly, thinks they are idiots. They have countered with death threats because that’s proven to be the most effective way to fight for ethics in game journalism.

This kook had an accident because he was driving too fast in slippery conditions.  Somehow, he seems to think that Wu had something to do with the fact that he can’t drive and has decided that she tried to kill him.

That's right - all ice storms are plots to kill members of Gamergate

That’s right – all ice storms are plots to kill members of Gamergate

Because he seems like a really important guy.  The kind of guy who it would be important to kill by magically summoning up an ice storm and making him forget how to drive.

Or maybe Wu was his driving instructor and she did a really shitty job.

This video is made by a crazy person and the only thing that bothers me more than the crazy person is the ones that take him seriously.

I Watched Far Too Much of a Debate Between Chris Kluwe and GamerGate Supporter

I admit I didn’t watch the whole thing because at some point it was just embarrassing.  I was watching Rocky beat the crap out of Gilligan.

If Gilligan were a misogynistic asshole.  So let’s just say I don’t feel sorry for Gilligan.

For one thing, Gilligan never really rocked that hat.

For one thing, Gilligan never really rocked that hat.

Why Kluwe decided to devote 90 minutes to this guy and his legion of whiny jackasses, who honestly believe that if they click their heels together while saying “ethics in game journalism” enough times they can make it true, is a question only he can answer.

I would hope it isn’t because he thought he could get through to this guy, who seemed more interested in improper definitions of the word “cult” than he was in making a cogent point.  If he was doing it to help make this guy look like more of an idiot, his mission was accomplished.

Further….

Aw fuck.  I looked at the comments.  Fuck this.
