Shit that Pissed me Off – 1/9/15

I Watched Far Too Much of a Debate Between Chris Kluwe and GamerGate Supporter

I admit I didn’t watch the whole thing because at some point it was just embarrassing.  I was watching Rocky beat the crap out of Gilligan.

If Gilligan were a misogynistic asshole.  So let’s just say I don’t feel sorry for Gilligan.

For one thing, Gilligan never really rocked that hat.

For one thing, Gilligan never really rocked that hat.

Why Kluwe decided to devote 90 minutes to this guy and his legion of whiny jackasses, who honestly believe that if they click their heels together while saying “ethics in game journalism” enough times they can make it true, is a question only he can answer.

I would hope it isn’t because he thought he could get through to this guy, who seemed more interested in improper definitions of the word “cult” than he was in making a cogent point.  If he was doing it to help make this guy look like more of an idiot, his mission was accomplished.

Further….

Aw fuck.  I looked at the comments.  Fuck this.

Felicia Day Speaks Up About GamerGate and is Almost Immediately Doxxed

For those unfamiliar with the term, doxxing is when people take personal information (like home address and private e-mail accounts) and share them with everyone on the internet.  The intent is to encourage others to harass the individual in question either online or in person.

Because people are assholes.

Chris Kluwe wrote a profanity ridden rant against GamerGaters earlier in the week.  Was his contact information splashed all over the internet?  Of course not.

What is interesting about the Gamergate phenomenon is that they claim this issue is not about women in gaming and yet when women speak up, they suffer harassment almost immediately.  I’m not saying Kluwe didn’t get called names.  He probably did.

The difference, though, is Kluwe (and Wil Wheton) were called names.  Day had her personal information tweeted out within an hour.

This is not Felicia Day's house. Or Chris Kluwe's. Because where they live is none of your damn business.

This is not Felicia Day’s house. Or Chris Kluwe’s. Because where they live is none of your damn business.

Now I’m fairly certain a brief internet search could have yielded her home address.  That information may be private but it is hard to protect.  Her personal e-mail would take a little more digging but probably isn’t too hard to get.  Privacy is an illusion the internet is rapidly dispelling.

None of that changes the fact doxxing is an asshole move.  The only purpose is to harass the victim rather than engage in civil discourse.

GamerGate is not about ethics.  It is about being pissy because female gamers (and their allies) would like a few games for themselves. It also has an unoriginal and stupid name.

Teen Makes a Joke on Twitter and People Tell her She Should Kill Herself

So here’s the joke:

This beautiful earth is now officially 2014 years old, amazing

Now shame on her, I guess, for failing to clearly identify her post as sarcasm.  I mean she’s only a teenager so it could naturally be assumed that she wasn’t making a joke but was, rather, a complete idiot.

Her joke went viral and when jokes go viral on the internet, two things happen.  The first is that a lot of people are amused by the joke.  The second is that a lot of other people will completely fail to get her joke and reveal themselves to be complete assholes.

If this was a real book, it would eventually outsell the bible. Ironically, nobody who bought it would read it because they would assume they already knew it all.

The internet, my friends, is the most Democratic place in the world.  You want free speech?  You can make a joke that reaches thousands of people.

Be warned, however, that some of those people are idiotic.  And the idiotic ones are the most likely to say something.

Chris Kluwe Released by the Vikings

I don’t know for certain why he was let go.  I could speculate and a lot of other people have but the fact is the dude is a great voice for change and now he’s on his way out of town.

He’s bigger than the game he plays.  I know that sounds ridiculous given Football is the most profitable professional sport in the world but it is just a sport.  Kluwe tried to use his celebrity to help achieve a higher goal.

What goal could be higher than balancing a football on your middle finger? Get your priorities straight, Chris! Get it? Straight???? Get it?????????

And I’m pretty sure he got fired for it.  I guess you should have waited to speak your mind until you weren’t a professional football player, Chris.

Not a problem now though! Boo-yah!

Pakistani Couple Killed Their Daughter Because She Looked at a Boy

A 15-year-old girl looked at a boy on a motorcycle twice.  Her parents feared she was going to turn out like her older sister who had already “disgraced” the family. She promised she wouldn’t do it again but it was too late because her mother had already thrown acid on her.

The good news is that her parents figure it was her destiny to die like that.  It wasn’t really their fault, you see.  They were just tools of destiny.

It was also apparently her destiny to die because her parents waited almost 12 hours to take her to the hospital after they threw acid on her face.  They would have taken her right away, you see, but it was her destiny to wait.

Let’s be clear: religious fanaticism didn’t kill that girl.

But it sure didn’t help keep her alive, either.

The Party that is Most interested in “Stopping Voter Fraud” Appears to have Hired Firms who engaged in Voter Fraud

I don’t care how you feel about it – voter fraud is a red herring in the Voter ID debate.  There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud and further, no evidence that voter ID laws will prevent fraud.

Also, we’ll need to draw some blood.

What Voter ID laws will do is make it more difficult for college students to vote without getting a new drivers’ license in the state where they attend college.  It will make it harder for seniors who no longer drive to vote.  It will make it harder for a lot of people to vote and that pisses me off because voting is one of the most basic rights we all have in this country.

We shouldn’t make it harder to vote.  We should make it fucking easy to vote.  That way more people will vote.

All that aside, isn’t it a bit suspicious that the party who is most strongly pushing for voter fraud is responsible for voter fraud?  I know it’s just one guy but that proves my argument.  This sort of thing is not widespread.

What are they really trying to do with these amendments?  Because it would seem what they aren’t trying to do is stop voter fraud.

Words can hurt, but actions hurt more

Dear Matt Birk:

Most of my friends don’t know it, but I’m a football fan.  I have followed the Vikings for my entire life and when you were our center, I proudly wore your jersey when I attended games.  When you left Minnesota for Baltimore, I understood your decision completely.  That is the nature of the game.  Your favorite players move on.  I may not be a fan of the Baltimore Ravens but I can’t deny I would love to see you win a Super Bowl.

I was saddened, therefore, to read your Op-Ed piece in the Star Tribune supporting the amendment to ban gay marriage in the State of Minnesota.

I wasn’t surprised to learn that you are against gay marriage.  I fully expect that most of the athletes in the National Football League share your opinion on the subject.  Players like Chris Kluwe, who speak out in support of marriage equality, are relatively rare.
